What is WHOIS?
WHOIS is a public lookup service that shows the registration record for a domain name. A record typically lists the registrar the domain is held with, when it was registered and when it expires, the name servers it uses and its current status. It helps you check whether a domain is taken, see when it might become available, find the right registrar to contact about abuse and confirm the details of domains you own.
Why can’t I see the owner’s name or email?
Many records hide the owner’s personal contact details to protect their privacy. You will often see the registrar’s details or a privacy service instead.
Can I use WHOIS to check my own domain?
Yes. It is a quick way to confirm your expiry date, name servers and that your domain is locked against unauthorized transfers.
How do I update the WHOIS details for my domain?
Sign in to your account and edit the contact information for the domain. Changes appear in the public record after the registry updates it.
