How it works

Transfer a domain in four steps

A little preparation at your current registrar makes the move quick and painless.

  1. Unlock your domain

    Turn off the transfer lock at your current registrar. The domain must be at least 60 days old.

  2. Get your authorization code

    Request the transfer authorization code (sometimes called an EPP code) from your current registrar.

  3. Start the transfer

    Enter your domain above, add the code at checkout and confirm the order.

  4. Approve and relax

    Approve the confirmation email. Most transfers complete within 5 to 7 days.

What is a domain transfer?

A domain transfer moves a domain you already own from one registrar to another without changing who owns it. You unlock the domain at your current registrar, request an authorization code and approve the move, and your website and email keep working while it happens. Transferring lets you manage all of your domains, hosting and email in one account, and most transfers also add a year to your registration, so you don’t lose any time you’ve already paid for.

How long does a domain transfer take?

Most transfers complete within 5 to 7 days after you approve them. Some extensions are faster.

Will my website go down during the transfer?

It shouldn’t. Transferring the registration doesn’t by itself change your DNS settings. Keep a copy of your current records before you start so you can confirm everything afterward.

What is an authorization code?

It’s a unique code, sometimes called an EPP code, that your current registrar provides to prove you own the domain and approve the move.

Can I transfer a domain I just registered?

Usually not right away. Most domains can’t be transferred within 60 days of registration or a previous transfer.

Does transferring extend my registration?

For most extensions, a transfer adds a year to your domain’s current expiration date, and any remaining time is kept.
